Ice luges, or ice bars, are a fun way to serve alcoholic beverages and make them instantly cold at the same time. There are plenty of ways to make your own ice luges, but only two ways to serve your drinks on them. The most fun way to serve drinks is to have people sit or crouch at the bottom of the luges and take the beverages directly into their mouths, but this proves to be a serious health hazard. If you plan on making an ice luge or two for your next party, here is how you can serve the alcohol while keeping things sanitary.
There is no hard and fast rule that says you have to use your mouth only when you have an ice luge. In fact, most bars in the U.S. that have begun using ice luges have to dispense into glasses. Otherwise they are violating state health codes. It is still fun to see the alcohol dispensed this way, and equally nice to chill it with an ice luge instead of pouring a drink "on the rocks."
Position Your Ice Luges Differently
If you still want the fun of dispensing alcohol down the ice luge into guests' mouths, just position the luges in such a way that guests can lay down underneath them. You could even position chairs or cots underneath the luges so it is easier for your guests to lay down and drink from the luges without their mouths ever touching the ends of the luges. It may provide some comical fun too, for your guests to drink this way.
Build Long Luge Ends You Can Chip Off
If you build ice luges with very long ends, then each person can put his or her mouth on the end of a luge while drinking. (You will need a long chest freezer to make long-ended luges.) Just chip off an inch of the luges' ends after each guest takes a turn and you can keep the luges sanitary and safe for the next drinker. Once there is no more luge end to chip off, the luge drinking is done and everyone goes back to glasses and ice cubes.
Reserve Ice Luges for Specific Guests
Last but not least, you could reserve ice luges for specific guests. It is similar to using the exact same wine glass for each guest by tagging each glass with an individualized wine glass charm, only you are tagging each luge for a guest that has requested one. You could reserve ice luges as a party game for participants, too, and then you know that only those participants will be drinking from the luges, thereby reducing any concerns about health risks.
